R-Day celebrated with patriotic fervour: Guv unfurls national flag, CM presents awardsTamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit, on Friday, led the state in celebrating the country's 69th Republic Day, as he unfurled the national flag at a colourful function at Marina beach in the city.
After the march past, CM Edappadi K Palaniswami handed over prizes to various awardees. The Anna medal for gallantry was given to Egmore Railway Station RPF constable K Shanmugam. Kottai Ameer communal harmony award was presented to I Sadiq Basha of Thiruvannamalai district.
The Governor took the salute at the ceremonial march past
in which contingents of the Army, Navy, Army Band and Air
Force, Coast Guard, Central Reserve Police Force, Central
Industrial Security Force, Railway Protection Force, Chennai City Police, Mounted Police, Tamil Nadu Commando Force (men and women), Tamil Nadu Special Police, Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu Fire Service, Home Guard, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Ex-Servicemen participated.
Following the distribution of awards, cultural dance performances of school children took place. Among schools, Everwin Matric School clinched the first prize, Children Garden Girls School came second and Government Girls School Ashok Nagar came third. Among colleges, Queen Mary's college clinched the title, Dr MGR Janaki Arts and Science College came second and SDNB Vaishnava college came third.
In all 16 departments, including Police, Information
and Public Relations, Cooperation, Rural development, School Education, Higher Eduction, Public Health, Handlooms and Textiles, ADi Dravidar and Tribal welare, Tourism, Sopcial welfare, Public (Elections) and Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation took part in the pageantry of floats highlighting various welfare schemes of the government.
The celebrations witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam, Cabinet members, MPs, MLAs, Consulate officials of various countries and officials from Tamil Nadu government.
