After six years, Tamil Nadu government on Friday hiked the fares of buses under State run transport corporations and private entities approximately by 20 to 54.54 per cent.
The rates have been revised for all services, including intercity and town and metro services across the State.
The fare hike follows a recent week-long strike by public transport workers that crippled transport services across the State.
Minimum fare of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses in Chennai has been increased from Rs 3 to Rs 5, and the maximum from Rs 14 to Rs 23. In case of non-metros, tickets would range from Rs 3 to Rs 19.
For mofussil services, the fare has been increased by nearly a third, according to a release from the state transport department on Friday evening.
Significantly, the government also announced a fund for accident compensation and prevention, besides a panel to go into restructuring of bus fares in future.
