Fresh row in TTV camp, Dhinakaran explains why delay in forming new party

A senior functionary of the TTV Dhinakaran faction, on Friday stoked a major controversy by openly boasting before party workers that Rs 20 tokens were issued to people in RK Nagar by-poll to tilt their vote in favour of the rebel AIADMK leader, who won the election by a resounding majority.

Thottiyam Rajashekar, who was handpicked by Dhinakaran to head the Tiruchi South unit of his faction, also said it was Dhinakaran who asked former Perambur MLA P Vetrivel to release the video that showed J Jayalalithaa in her hospital bed after the rival AIADMK factions pasted posters alleging that V K Sasikala killed her.

However, both claims were denied by Dhinakaran. Meanwhile, Dhinakaran on Friday cited technical hurdles in forming a new political outfit and said there were no such difficulties in functioning as the AIADMK (Amma) if the court allowed them to use that name.

According to rules, the 18 legislators, who were loyal to him but were elected as AIADMK representatives, could not be part of a new party, he said.

In the meantime, DMK candidate N. Marudu Ganesh, who lost the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar bypoll to dissident AIADMK leader Dhinakaran, has made a representation to the Election Commission (EC), accusing Dhinakaran of having spent well beyond the expenditure limit set by the poll body during the campaign.

In his representation, Ganesh alleged that Dhinakaran had “incurred huge expenditure beyond the permitted level” and further claimed that the independent candidate had “suppressed” some of his expenditure.
