The oppposition parties in Tamil Nadu slammed the state government for the steep hike in bus fares and announced protest demonstrations demanding its immediate rollback.
DMK said it would hold a demonstration in all district headquarters on January 27, the BJP also announced a stir on January 24, the same day when the Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) of Thol Thirumavalavan also announced a similar agitation.
The CPI(M) also announced that it would stage a dharna and hold protest demonstration on January 22 denouncing the steep hike and the PMK on January 25.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Sunday said his party cadres would attend protests to be conducted by the DMK on January 27, against the bus fare hike that came into effect in Tamil Nadu from Saturday.
Meanwhile, taking a cue from government buses which are collecting increased fares from Saturday, share-autos in Chennai too have hiked their charges. Commuters allege that at many places, the rates have been doubled.
In the meantime, under fire from opposition parties for its decision to hike bus fare from Friday, the Tamil Nadu government has said that even after the increase, ticket charges are less here when compared to other states.
