Cab driver who set himself ablaze after tiff with cops, dies

A 21-year-old taxi driver, who set himself ablaze near SRP Tools on Old Mahabalipuram Road on Wednesday, succumbed to his burn injuries at the Government Kilpauk Hospital on Friday.

The cab driver was not wearing his uniform and had not fastening his seat belt on Wednesday at the SRP tools signal. Traffic police personnel fined him for the violations.

A scuffle ensued between him and police personnel as he started to shoot a video of the policemen in action on his mobile phone.

This led to an angry exchange between the police and the can driver, after which he was abused and beaten by police. Manikandan returned to the spot after two hours and set himself on fire.

A police sub-inspector has been suspended in connection with the incident and the case will now be referred for a magisterial probe, sources said.

However, the irate family members of Manikandan, a native of Tirunelveli district, demanded action against all the police officials allegedly involved in the incident and threatened to launch a stir if their demand was not met.
