The Amma Two Wheeler Scheme which would allow women to purchase mopeds by availing 50 per cent government subsidy will begin from February 24, coinciding with 70th birth anniversary of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
In Greater Chennai Corporation area, 9,500 working women will be identified under the scheme in 2017-18 for purchase of gearless/auto-geared vehicles. Persons with disability may avail themselves of retro-fitted three wheeler scooters under the scheme.
The free application forms can be collected at Corporation offices, taluk offices and the collectorate. The forms can also be downloaded from Tamil Nadu government website. Filled in applications should be submitted from January 22 to February 5. The applications can also be sent through speed or registered posts.
Those women in the age group of 18-40 and have an annual income of less than Rs 2.50 lakh are eligible for the scheme. Preferences will be given to families run by a woman, a widower, disabled women and transgenders. Only one person from a family was eligible for the scheme.
A maximum subsidy of 50% of the cost of the two-wheeler or Rs 25,000 whichever is less, will be provided for the beneficiary who will be permitted to buy the vehicle of her choice from her own funds or by availing loans from banks/non-banking finance companies governed by the rules of the Reserve Bank of India.
The vehicle should have been manufactured on or after January 1, 2018 and comply with the latest emission norms. The beneficiary should be a native of and resident of Tamil Nadu.
