Tight security in Chennai for Kaanum Pongal, over 5000 cops at work

An elaborate security arrangement is in place in the city in view of Kaanum Pongal today, when people turn out in large numbers at important public places.

Speaking to the media, city Commissioner of Police, A K Viswanathan, said, “Around 5,000 police personnel, in uniform and plain clothes, will be deployed for the security purposes on the day of Kaanum Pongal. Security will be strengthened in order to avert any untoward incidents".

"Installing temporary barricades, patrolling by the city’s Mounted Branch and operation of beach buggies have begun,” said a senior police officer.

He added that policemen had been advised to initiate stern action against people who harassed women. The City police are mobilising medical teams to provide first aid and have enlisted the support of fishermen who can help in the event of an emergency.

Security has been beefed up on Marina and Besant Nagar beaches here, where thousands of people are expected to gather during Kaanum Pongal celebration.

As part of the measures, city police will provide wrist bands for children to trace them, in case they go missing.
