A broken brick was hurled by some unidentified persons towards a dais where DMDK leader Vijayakanth was speaking at a demonstration in support of the fireworks industry, but it fell short and did not injure anyone.
The meeting was held to express solidarity with fireworks manufacturers whose business and livelihood were affected by a recent Supreme Court ban on fireworks.
Speaking at the meeting, Vijayakanth said lakhs of people would be affected if there was a ban on fireworks and demanded formation of a welfare board for workers in fireworks manufacturing units.
Vijayakanth said the fireworks manufactured in Sivakasi were being banned on the grounds of environmental pollution while Chinese fireworks were being imported to the country. Steps should be taken to protect the livelihood of over eight lakh workers who were dependent on this industry, he added.
Meanwhile, Vijayakanth, on Sunday, hit out at lyricist Vairamuthu for his comments on Andal, the only woman Alvar saint of Hinduism.
Speaking to the media after offering prayers at the Andal temple at Srivilliputtur, the actor-turned-politician, who was accompanied by his wife and party leader Premalatha, said that Vairamuthu's remarks on Andal in his recent article were condemnable.
