Country's first defence corridor to come up in TN: Nirmala Sitharaman

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the government's announcement of creating defence manufacturing corridors will give a big boost to defence production and has paved the way for setting up the first Defence Production Corridor in Tamil Nadu.



Hours after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the Union Budget on Thursday, Nirmala Sitharaman informed that the first ever defence corridor will be built in Tamil Nadu, which will link Chennai and Bengaluru.



"Now that the (budget) announcement has been made for defence corridor, the first one will be built starting at Tamil Nadu, linking Chennai and Bengaluru. Announcement for the second corridor will soon be made," she said.



"These are the first ever Defence Production Corridors being formed in the country. These Defence Industry Corridors will give a big boost to defence production in the country," she said.



The Minister said that the Department of Defence Production had recently conducted a major Defence Industries Development Meet in Chennai in January 2018 with huge participation from defence industries, including MSMEs from Chennai, Mysore, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli and from other places as well.



She on Wednesday visited naval units, INS Parundu and INS Kattabomman in south Tamil Nadu, where she interacted with officers and sailors. She visited INS Parundu Naval Air Station at Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram District.



Later, accompanied by Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, she visited INS Kattabomman in Tirunelveli district. She was briefed on the unit's activities by Captain Vishal Gupta, the Commanding Officer, a Defence release said.
