Last rites of Kanchi seer today, condolences pour in from across country

Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal is set to be interred at the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham today. The 69th head of the math died of a cardiac arrest on Wednesday morning. He was 82.



The last rites (brindavana pravesha karyakramam) of Jayendra Saraswathi is being performed today. His samadhi will be placed closer to his predecessor Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal.



President Ram Nath Kovind said: "Sad to hear of the passing of Jayendra Saraswatiji, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Our country has lost a spiritual leader and social reformer of rare eminence. My condolences to his countless disciples and followers."



Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said: "Pay my respects to Kanchi peethadhipathi Shri Jayendra Saraswati who attained moksha. His contribution for the welfare of mankind and in promoting spirituality will always be an inspiration for others."



Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: "Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya was at the forefront of innumerable community service initiatives. He nurtured institutions which transformed the lives of the poor and downtrodden."



Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m saddened to hear about the death of Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. He was revered by lakhs of believers all over the world for his teachings. May his soul rest in peace.”



Tamil Nadu , Governor Banwarilal Purohit said "His death is a great loss to society, particularly his followers." Purohit paid a visit to the Seer only on Tuesday.



Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said, "apart from spiritual work, he (Jayendra Saraswathi) also showed a lot of interest in furthering issues of societal importance."
