While opposition parties such as DMK, PMK, DMDK and CPI(M) have opposed the unveiling of former CM J Jayalalithaa's portrait in the Assembly, the BJP and Congress MLA Vijayadharani have welcomed it.
Opposition parties led by the DMK on Sunday announced that they would boycott the function on Monday.
Contending that Jayalalithaa was the prime accused in the disproportionate assets case in which the Supreme Court convicted all the accused (after her death), DMK working president M.K. Stalin said it would set a bad precedent as she was convicted in the case.
Speaking to reporters, he said that unveiling a portrait of a person who had been convicted by the Supreme Court was against law.
DMDK president Vijayakanth said, "Jayalalithaa was convicted by the court in the disproportionate assets case. Hence, her portrait should not be unveiled in the Assembly."
PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss said, "unveiling of Jayalalithaa's portrait in the TN Assembly is an unacceptable move."
Hailing Jayalalithaa for her achievements, Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju pointed out measures like the cradle baby scheme to protect girl children and starting the first all women police stations in India. He said Jayalalithaa had implemented welfare measures for people that were dreamt of by leaders like Periyar (rationalist leader E V Ramasamy) and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C N Annadurai.
