Hours after an all-party meet on Cauvery issue was announced by the main opposition DMK on February 23, the Tamil Nadu government on Monday said chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will chair an all-party meeting on it on February 22.
Following this, DMK announced dropping its all-party meeting and said it would participate in the government's meet.
"Tamil Nadu government will immediately take steps on the issue after consulting and getting the views of leaders of all parties," an official release said.
Stalin welcomed the announcement of the all-party meeting and said his party would participate in the meet and give constructive suggestions to the government on the issue.
Farmers in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu have so far reacted calmly to the court verdict, which marginally increased Karnataka’s share and ordered a reduction in the allocation for their state. The ruling AIADMK and the DMK, however, have been trying to paint each other as the villain for the reduced allocation.
On Friday, the Supreme Court had modified the 2007 Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal’s order, and directed Karnataka to release 177.25 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu as against 192 TMC earlier. The reduced amount of water was viewed as a setback to Tamil Nadu.
