Close on the heels of a high court order directing authorities to take steps to retrieve temple properties illegally alienated or leased, the state government has asked temple administrations to conduct safety audits.
Days after the massive fire at the famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu government has directed holding of safety audits of big temples in the state.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami gave the directions to officials at a review meeting held in this connection with senior cabinet colleagues and officials.
Meanwhile, the Madras high court, noting that nearly 50,000 acres of temple land in Tamil Nadu has been encroached upon in the last few years, directed authorities to take steps to retrieve the properties illegally alienated or leased.
Justice R Mahadevan held that a duty was cast on the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and CE) department authorities to ensure temples and endowments were properly administered and that their income was duly appropriated for the purposes for which they were founded or exist.
Inspecting the eastern parts of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple complex, Bharatiya Janata Party State president Tamilisai Soundararajan said history would be lost if Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department continued their inefficient management of temples.
