Death sentence for Dhashvanth in child rape-murder case

A Mahila court in Chengalpet has sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a six-year-old girl, and for also killing his own mother.

Special Judge P Velumurgan pronounced the death sentence and also awarded P Dhashvanth, a 23-year-old techie, a jail term of 46 years on separate counts.

The judge earlier in the day held him guilty of the offences and asked his opinion on the sentence and Daswant replied that a minimum punishment be given to him.

Dhashvanth had raped, murdered and burnt the body of the little girl in February 2017. Later, while out on bail, he murdered his own mother Sarala for money and jewellery and fled. Dhashvanth, however, expressed guilt in the court.

He was charged under Sections 302 (Punishment for murder), 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of Indian Penal Code and 4 (Aggravated penetrative assault) and 5 (Punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Over 30 witnesses were examined and 40 documents marked. Dhashvanth wrote to Judge P Velmurugan accepting his guilt in a six-page letter.

However, when the case came up for hearing before the Chengalpet Mahila Court, Judge Velmurugan rejected the letter, declaring that Dhashvanth “could not play with the courts. You can communicate with the court only through your lawyer.”
