The Madras high court Madurai bench on Wednesday gave four months to the Union government to decide the positive and negative aspects of locations identified by the Tamil Nadu government for establishing the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state and file a report on June 15.
It sought to know from the Union Health Ministry reasons for the delay in setting up premier health institute AIIMS in Tamil Nadu. It also directed the ministry to file a detailed counter on the pros and cons of five sites suggested by the state government.
A Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and R. Hemalatha, hearing a contempt petition filed against the Central and State governments “for their failure to finalise a location”, posted the case to Wednesday. The court had earlier directed a private notice to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Disposing a petition filed by one Baskaran, who sought a court directive to set up AIIMS in Madurai, the court had directed the Union Government to disclose the location of the hospital by December 31, 2017.
As the directive was not obeyed, petitioners Baskaran and one K K Ramesh filed a contempt petition praying for action against the Centre for not disclosing the location of AIIMS.
The court had earlier given a deadline on December 31 last year for locating the site and making it public on January 1, after it heard the petition filed by K K Ramesh. However, with the government failing to do so, the petitioner filed a contempt case before the high court seeking action against the secretaries of the health departments of the Union and state governments.
