The all-party meeting called by the Tamil Nadu government over the Supreme Court’s February 16 verdict on the Cauvery water sharing dispute was held on Thursday.
Politicians who attended the meeting on the Cauvery issue in the presence of farmer representatives on Thursday resolved to put up a united fight to secure the interests of the state’s farming community.
It decided to demand immediate constitution of a Cauvery water management board as per the apex court ruling. The Supreme Court last week ordered an increase in Karnataka’s water share and asked the Centre to form within six weeks a board to implement the water distribution.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will lead a delegation of leaders from all political parties, representatives from various farmers associations and Members of Parliament from the State to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon and press him for immediate constitution of the Cauvery Management Board.
The meeting convened by chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami resolved to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will arrive in Chennai on Saturday, to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB)?as soon as possible and pressure Karnataka to accept and follow the Supreme Court (SC) order in letter and spirit.
On February 16, the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on the long-awaited Cauvery water-sharing dispute. The court announced that Tamil Nadu would get 177.25 tmc ft water, which was brought down and Karnataka would get 14.75 tmc ft more than it was allocated in the previous judgement. The apex court also ordered the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board, a long-standing request of Tamil Nadu.
