Upping the pressure on the ruling AIADMK to withdraw the recent bus fare hike, opposition DMK on Tuesday submitted to the Tamil Nadu government a report it had prepared with recommendations, including for finances, for the public transport sector.
DMK working president and leader of opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly, M K Stalin, on Tuesday called on chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami at the state secretariat here.
Stalin presented a memorandum to Palaniswami, urging him to reduce the bus fare which was hiked recently. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Stalin said, "If the 27 requests of the DMK are addressed, there is no need for bus fare hike. We have asked them to strike down the value added tax on diesel."
Stalin said, "Since the government machinery has been remaining paralysed, we, the main Opposition party, took initiative to come out with suggestions for revamping the transport corporations."
The Leader of Opposition, however, stated that the chief minister, whom he had met for the first time, did not give any assurance on the matter.
"We will convene another all-party meeting and discuss," he said when asked about the opposition parties' future course of action. The DMK had convened an "all-party meeting" last week to discuss the issue.
