In a bid to monitor the interactions between traffic police personnel and motorists on the road and to gather proof of traffic violations, the Chennai traffic police personnel were given body worn cameras on Friday.
This decision comes after the death of Manikandan, who set himself ablaze after allegedly getting humiliated by a traffic police officer on Rajiv Gandhi Salai on January 24.
“With the body cameras, we will be able to know what exactly happened,” said a senior police officer.
The move would also help in "probing complaints made against traffic policemen and clear doubts regarding traffic violations," a city police release said.
"To address differences between traffic police officers and public and create cordiality, policemen have been provided with body worn cameras," the release said.
The ‘body worn cameras’ that resemble wireless communication set, can be fixed on the uniform. “We are planning to give cameras to all the traffic police personnel soon,” sources said.
