Chennai police arrest over 70 rowdies during birthday bash

Resembling a scene straight out of a Tamil police film, gun-toting officers of the city police arrested over 70 anti-socials assembled at a birthday bash of a fellow history-sheeter late on Tuesday night.

Over a 100 rowdies were gathered at the bash to celebrate the birthday of Binu, who cut the cake with a sickle. They  were also allegedly blocking the traffic on the Outer Ring Road near Ambattur during the birthday celebration.

Many, including Binu, escaped as they saw the police party approaching. But the officers with their guns, took more than 70 in their custody and also seized several cars and two wheelers.

Vinu has several cases pending against him including murder cases. "Whereas most of the other men have at least a couple of criminal cases pending against them. Most of them are facing cases of murder or robbery," police said.

Police sources said at least 50 rowdies have fled the scene and four special teams headed by Assistant Commissioner Kannan were formed to nab them.

Special teams were also fanned out to neighbouring Kancheepuram district following reports that they might have been hiding there.
