NEET & Anitha death: Students stage sudden protest at Marina

Students breached police security and attempted to march to Marina Beach in Chennai on Wednesday to stage a pro-jallikattu-type protest against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and 'seeking justice' for the suicide of plus two topper Anitha.

They raised slogans against the central and state governments and demanded scrapping of the national entrance test for admission to medical colleges.

Protests were held in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Karur.

Students, who gathered at the mausoleum of Jayalalithaa, squatted there, raised slogans against NEET and demanded justice for Anitha, a Dalit medical aspirant and anti-NEET court petitioner who committed suicide on Friday.

V. Mariappan, president of SFI, said, “The government shows scant regard to the demands of hundreds of students who have been agitating for abolition of NEET. The callous attitude of the government provokes us to intensify our agitation from Thursday.

Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa opposed the NEET tooth and nail. That is why we chose her memorial as the venue for the agitation. Moreover, the government claims that it follows the ideals set by former Chief Minister but failed to follow her in this issue.”

The students argued with police that they came just to meditate. However, police evicted them from the Jayalalthaa memorial and detained them in a community hall.
