The state government informed the Madras high court on Thursday that action has been initiated against teachers agitating along with other state government employees, demanding implementation of Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.
The government informed that it had decided not to pay salary to schoolteachers who had been abstaining from work following a strike call given by Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations - Government Employees Organisations (JACTO-GEO).
Additional Advocate General Venkatramani representing the state government informed this to the court in an affidavit containing replies to various other queries raised on Wednesday by Justice N Kirubakaran with regard to a section of government teachers who are on strike pressing for their demands.
Over 33,487 primary school teachers had not reported for duty as of Wednesday, given six recognized unions along other un-recognized unions taking part in the agitation.
The judge said he was aware of insinuations made against him in television debates by the representatives of teachers associations.
However, he decided to remain steadfast in his resolve to question the propriety of teachers going on strike because, “this court has a moral responsibility to raise these questions.
In its affidavit, the state government further said that retired teachers were also working as office-bearers in the unions. The High Court had on Wednesday pulled up a section of Tamil Nadu government school teachers who are on strike, saying it affected students.
