Rumours haunt TN after DGP order, but nothing happened

Chennai, Sept 27: Multiple rumours, including the ones about the health of DMK chief M Karunanidhi and a crucial order from the governor, did rounds after a circular directing all Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) battalions to report to their respective headquarters was issued by the Director-General of Police on Tuesday.

Even as the rumours triggered panic among the people, nothing extraordinary happened and the DGP TK Rajendran himself clarified that it was a routine order.

DMK top brass on Tuesday night rubbished rumours about Karunanidhi's health and released his photograph with his son M K Stalin and other leaders to clear the air after social media played havoc with false messages.

“Our leader is well. There is nothing wrong with him. There is no basis for the rumour that is doing the rounds,” said senior DMK leader and former Union Minister TR Baalu.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Karunanidhi, Stalin demanded action against those who spread rumours about his father’s health.

In his order to all Commissioners of Police, Superintendents of Police, Zonal Inspectors-General of Police and others, DGP Rajendran said all TSP companies should return to their respective bases in a couple of days.

He also directed the CoPs and SPs to mobilise their Armed Reserve strength “to meet out the contingency in their jurisdiction.”
