The Madras High Court has quashed orders passed by Chennai police on May 29 detaining Thirumurugan Gandhi, the leader of May 17 Movement, and three others under the Goondas Act.
On May 21, Thirumurugan Gandhi and several other were arrested when close to 300 people held a rally at the Marina beach, defying prohibitory orders. May 17 had called for a candlelight vigil to mark the anniversary of the Mullivaikal genocide in northern Sri Lanka.
The fight between the Sri Lankan government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had led to the death of several Tamils.
Delivering its order on the habeas corpus petitions filed by the four belonging to 'May 17 Movement', a division bench comprising Justices A Selvam and Pon Kalaiyarasan held that there was a delay in disposal of their representations against their detention by the authorities concerned.
Meanwhile, Arupatham Ammal, mother of A G Perarivalan, one of the convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Tuesday, appealed to Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to extend her son's parole by one more month.
In a letter, she said, "Since my husband T Gnanasekaran and daughter A G Anbumani are still under constant supervision and treatment, I realised that Perarivalan's stay would boost the spirit to fight their ailment and immensely help to regain their health if the ordinary leave is extended for another term of 30 days."
