Disqualification of 18 MLAs: EPS feels strong, Stalin & oppn cry foul, TTV claims more sleeper cells

It is the murder of democracy, said opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu on Monday after Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal disqualified 18 AIADMK rebel legislators under the anti-defection law.

DMK working president M K Stalin, PMK founder S Ramadoss, TNCC president S Thirunavukkarasar, TMC president G K Vasan, VCK supremo Thol Thirumavalavan, CPI(M) and CPI slammed the order.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Monday asserted that his government could not be toppled, though some forces harbored such hopes.

On the other hand, sidelined AIADMK leader T T V Dhinakaran on Monday claimed that legislators supporting him would not have been disqualified had Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao acted on time on their plea against Palaniswami.

He also said that there are 10 more sleeper cells in EPS camp and they would vote against him in the trust vote.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly secretariat on Monday informed the Election Commission of India that 18 constituencies in the state are vacant, following disqualification of rebel MLAs. Also, steps have been taken to remove the names of the 18 legislators from the government's website. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao on Monday met President Ram Nath Kovind and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley amid a lingering political crisis in the state.
