The Madras High Court on Wednesday extended stay order on floor test in Tamil Nadu Assembly until further orders, while directing that there will be no election notification to seats of 18 disqualified MLAs.
It however refused to stay the disqualification of MLAs and adjourned the case to October 4.
Passing interim orders on a batch of petitions filed by 18 rebel MLAs (supporters of sidelined leader TTV Dhinakran), challenging their disqualification by Speaker P Dhanpal under the anti-defection law for withdrawing support to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and the DMK's petition seeking a direction to the Governor to hold the trust vote, Justice M Duraiswami extended the stay on holding the floor test till further orders.
During the hearing, lawyer of Tamil Nadu Speaker P Dhanapal, Aryama Sundaram said there will not be floor tests until counters are filed.
Alleging that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker was influenced by somebody, Dhinakaran’s lawyer questioned the court, “Why no committee was constituted according to laws of Assembly to enquire MLAs.”
Meanwhile, a meeting of DMK MLAs, which was scheduled in the evening to decide on the next course of action if the court passed any orders, has cancelled it after the court extended the stay on holding the floor test.
Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday had a holy dip in river Cauvery, as part of the Maha Pushkaram event. Accompanied by handloom minister O S Manian, chief government whip S Rajendran and others, he took the dip.
His rival TTV Dhinakaran took a swipe at him, saying no amount of holy dips could wash off his "betrayal". Nanjil Sampath said Cauvery got polluted because of the CM's act.
