The Tamil Nadu government has announced the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice A Arumughaswamy, retired judge of the Madras High Court, to investigate the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
"A government order has been issued to set up an inquiry commission headed by retired judge of the high court Justice Arumughaswamy to probe Jayalalithaa's death and submit a report," an official statement said.
Doubts have been raised over the events leading to Jayalalithaa's hospitalisation on Sept 22, 2016 and her death by various quarters with opposition parties including the DMK demanding a CBI probe.
The appointment of the commission of inquiry comes after a series of comments by ministers in the state government and the rival camps of AIADMK on the conditions leading up to Amma’s death.
Jayalalithaa, according to Apollo Hospital, had died of a heart attack on December 5 last year after a prolonged treatment for infection and other complications.
Meanwhile, opposition DMK on Monday stuck to its demand of a CBI probe into the death of Jayalalithaa, saying the inquiry commission set up by the Tamil Nadu government would not serve the purpose.
In a statement, DMK Working President MK Stalin said, "There will be no benefit from the inquiry commission announced by the state government." He added that CBI probe is needed.
