Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has expressed shock over the alleged attack on MDMK chief Vaiko by a few Sinhalese during a conference in Geneva, and urged the Centre to provide him adequate security cover.
In a statement, he said, "I was shocked and worried over the incident after reading news reports that some Sinhalese tried to attack Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko during the United Nations Human Rights Council conference in Geneva recently."
He added: "The incident is highly condemnable. I, on behalf of Tamilians, hereby urge the Centre to provide him security and ensure that such incidents do not occur again."
Vaiko on Monday said he was accosted by a group of Sinhalese inside the UN Human Rights Council hall in Geneva for raising the issue of human rights violations suffered by Sri Lankan Tamils in the island nation as also the alleged war crimes indulged in by the Sri Lankan army.
A video clip showed Vaiko accusing a group of Sinhalese of accosting him for speaking in defence of Lankan Tamils.
The MDMK leader who addressed the human rights council twice, had voiced his concern over the atrocities committed by the army and the government machinery against the Tamil civilians in the island nation.
A few days ago, DMK working president M K Stalin condemned attempts by “some Sri Lankan nationals” to attack Vaiko after he spoke about the “genocide” in northern Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
“I condemn the incident in Geneva. I take objection to the way a person from India was treated by Sri Lankan nationals and this has led to it becoming a cause for concern. I request the Indian
Government to condemn the incident,” Stalin said.
