9 killed, many injured in Coimbatore bus stand roof collapse

At least nine people were killed and many injured after the roof of a bus shelter collapsed in Coimbatore's Somanur district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

“It was a concrete roof measuring around 100 feet in length along the main building," reports said, quoting officials.

A police officer at the scene of accident reportedlly hinted that poor construction quality of the bus stand and inadequate maintenance could have led to the incident as the structure was built 13 years ago in 2004.

Eyewitnesses said the concrete ceiling of the bus stand for a length of about 50 foot collapsed, trapping men and women waiting for buses. Three ambulances rushed to the spot and took the injured to private hospitals and Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader MK Stalin expressed grief and offered condolences to the families who lost members of their kin in the hapless incident.

After visiting the injured at CMCH, District collector T.N. Hariharan said that arrangements have been made to shift the injured persons from private hospital to the Government hospital. Hospital authorities said that Vijaya and Murali are in a critical condition.
