Anna University VC appointment creates uproar, BJP denies saffronisation

Close on the heels of Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointing M K Surappa, a native of Karnataka as the new Anna University Vice Chancellor, opposition parties have questioned the move.

DMK working president M K Stalin said the appointment of Surappa, hailing from Karnataka as VC of Anna University, is not acceptable when Cauvery water sharing dispute is raging.

PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss said, "a vice-chancellor will be be able to perform his duties to the fullest only if he understands the culture and demographics over a period of time."

DK leader K Veeramani meanwhile has reportedly termed the appointment of a Kannadiga V-C as a shame.

However, the Anna University Teachers' Association said in a brief message: “We wholeheartedly welcome the new Vice-chancellor. AUTA will extend its fullest support.”

Meanwhile, BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan today said, "The appointment is based on talent. Surappa was selected based on his educational qualifications, not based on saffronism. No discrepencies were there in this appointment."
