Madras high court on Friday rejected the plea to disqualify Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam and legislators who cross-voted during the trust vote of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Also on the same day, the HC quashed a petition filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, who sought the removal of Jayalalithaa's portrait from the Assemby hall, since she was convicted in a disproportionate assets case.
Delivering verdicts on different pleas, the HC said it can not interfere in the decisions of the Assembly speaker.
The seven foot high portrait of M Jayalalithaa was unveiled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by the Speaker on February 12.
Passing orders on the petition filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Ms Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddahose dismissed the plea stating that the court could not interfere in the adminstrative powers of the Speaker.
Earlier in the day, in another crucial verdict, the HC dismissed a petition for early release filed by S Nalini, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
A Division Bench comprising Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice R Subramanian dismissed the plea on the ground that the court could not interfere on the issue as
as the matter was been already seized of by the Supreme Court.
