Amid continuing protests demanding its closure, the Sterlite Industries' copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi came under a petrol bomb attack by unidentified persons.
Reports said that nobody was injured in the incident which company sources blamed anti-Sterlite protesters who in turn termed it a drama staged by the company.
The incident happened near the main gate where there used to be four or five security personnel during the day and three at night. Three personnel were on duty when the incident took place around 12.30 am, a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, MDMK general secretary Vaiko filed a public interest litigation petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday, seeking an injunction against the functioning and extension of the copper smelting unit of Sterlite Industries at Meelavittan in Thoothukudi.
Vaiko said in his plea that Sterlite Industries, which is expanding its existing plant, was yet to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Central Pollution Control Board.
Moreover, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had not extended the consent for the existing plant to operate, he said and added that it lapsed in March 2018.
