3 aides of Veerappan acquitted

A court in Erode has acquitted three close associates of slain sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, in connection with an ivory smuggling case, in 2000.




Rajendran, Jawahar and Shanmugam, all close associates of Veerappan, were acquiited by Sathyamangalam Magistrate K Kumarasivam , who said there was no proper evidence against the accused.




Only last week, a close aide of Veerappan had died while serving his jail term at Parappana Agrahara Central prisons in Bengaluru.




Simon suffered severe diabetes and other ailments. He was shifted to Victoria Hospital from KR Hospital on April 4.




He was convicted for life in multiple cases, including a bomb blast case at Palar, Tamil Nadu, in 1993 and the murder of IPS officer P Harikrishna.




Simon hailed from Tomerpalya village in Kollegal taluk. He was considered an expert at exploding gelatin sticks, a technique which he had used in the 1993 Palar blast
