Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, the chancellor of state-run universities, on Tuesday ruled out his resignation in the wake of a raging controversy over a sex scandal in a college involving a woman assistant professor, who allegedly sought to lure girls into sexual favours to 'higher officials' in Madurai Kamaraj University.
He said he had never met Aruppukkottai Devanga Arts College assistant professor Nirmala Devi who allegedly persuaded four girl students to offer sexual favours to top officials in Madurai Kamaraj University.
“I have not met Nirmala Devi. I don't know her. I am lucky to be a great grandfather and I therefore deny all the charges against me,” the governor told reporters.
He added: "I am above politics. Strict action will be taken if someone is found guilty. We will get to know only after an inquiry."
Earlier, DMK working president MK Stalin and PMK leader S Ramadoss had said that the governor of the state, who is also the chancellor of the university, did not have the power to govern or probe malpractices in the colleges affiliated to the university.
He also said Cauvery issue was close to his heart and has been assured by Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari that the matter relating to the constitution of a river management board was under process.
