Modi in Chennai today, unprecedented security in city

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fast on Thursday but that woould not stop him from inaugurating a major defence exhibition near Chennai city that has been on edge due to protests over Cauvery water issue, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Speaking to reporters, she said she too would observe fast.
“I will be fasting. PM Modi is also fasting. Fasting is not going to stop him from coming here,” Nirmala Sitharaman said, after opening the DefExpo 2018, which celebrates Indian MSMEs that export equipment to armies across the world.

He will also visit the Cancer Institute, Adyar in Chennai and will inaugurate a variety of infrastructure projects there, including a palliative care centre, day care centre and nurses quarter during his day-long visit, an official statement said.

Meanwhile in Chennai, as many as 4000 personnel will be deployed as part of security arrangement during Modi’s ‘visit’ tomorrow.

The city police in coordination with its counterparts in Kanchipuram will be involved in strengthening the vigil. The Chennai police will be taking care of security along Adyar Cancer Institute to the Old Airport, and the rest will come under the Kanchipuram police limit.

The East Coast Road would be completely shut an hour ahead of PM Modi's visit to keep protesters at bay.
