Amid growing political turmoil over the emotive
Cauvery issue and black flag protests by the Opposition parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here from New Delhi on a short visit to Chennai visit today.

He presided over the Chennai Defence Expo event, besides attending a function at Cancer Institute at Adyar in the city.

He said the Centre has suggested to the finance commission to consider incentivising states working on population control.

Modi, who arrived by a special aircraft from New Delhi, was received at the airport by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Pon Radhakrishnan and others.

He said the government's commitment to peace is just as strong as its commitment to protecting its people and territory, and for this, necessary measures to equip the armed forces will be taken.

Meanwhile, Modi's visit to the city hit a raw nerve after his tour was coincidental to the Cauvery protests. Agitators vent their ire not only in the streets leading to the Prime Minister's venue, but also in social media where #GoBackModi is trending prime worldwide.
