CM says AIADMK not behind Vishal issue; holds talks with armed forces heads on fishermen rescue

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has dismissed suggestions that the AIADMK was behind rejection of actor Vishal’s nomination papers in RK Nagar by-election.

He said the state government and the ruling party did not 'interfere' in the functioning of the returning officer who acted independently.

"AIADMK has nothing to do with the rejection of nomination papers of actor Vishal. If forms are not filled properly and if there are some flaws, there will certainly be action against such people," he said.

Palaniswami and deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam attended a party meeting at RK Nagar on Wednesday.

The CM added: "Where did we interfere? We never do such things. The entire country is keenly watching the R K Nagar by-election and this organisation will survive another hundred years."

Meanwhile, Palaniswami who reviewed the search and rescue of Tamil Nadu fishermen (Op Sahayam) with senior officials of the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has sought authorities to accelerate the operation.

His plea to officials of the joint operation followed the apprehensions expressed by the affected fishers to the Kanyakumari district administration that their men who had gone for deep sea fishing could have been stranded in Karnataka, Maharash-tra, Gujarat or in Lakshadweep and Maldives. Hence, the officials should expedite the chore to trace and rescue the stranded men, he said.
