DMK working president M K Stalin has urged Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to take steps to declare Cyclone Ockhi that battered Kanyakumari as a national calamity.
He also sought expeditious search and rescue operation for missing fishermen. A DMK delegation led by party Stalin submitted a memorandum to the Governor at the Raj Bhavan.
Alleging that no proper survey of the damage caused by Cyclone Ockhi in Kanniyakumari district had been done even 15 days after the cyclone struck, Stalin said on Wednesday that even Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami did not pay proper attention to the problems faced by the people in the district.
Speaking to reporters after meeting governor, he said, "The Chief Minister, his Cabinet colleagues and IAS officers are contradicting one another on the data."
He added: "The Chief Minister went there and returned in the evening and there are no details about whether he visited the affected areas and met fishermen and their families. He reviewed the situation as if he chaired the AIADMK party meeting and made a few announcements."
The DMK claimed the chief minister, his deputy O Panneerselvam and senior state government officials were making "contradictory" statements on the number of missing and stranded fishermen as it had no true account in this regard.
