Polling for the by-election for Chennai's RK Nagar assembly seat began this morning amid tight security.
The AIADMK's E Madhusudhanan is up against TTV Dhinakaran, and the DMK's Marudhu Ganesh, a little-known lawyer but an RK Nagar local.
If either of the two AIADMK factions wins, that may be seen as a stamp of approval for the winning faction as the political heir of Jayalalithaa.
Meanwhile, DMK working president MK Stalin has managed to rally the opposition together. MDMK, Congress, VCK and Left parties are backing DMK candidate.
A DMK victory would certainly be interpreted to mean the party’s star is on the ascendant in the state, and would be a boost for Stalin.
Recently, following allegations of cash distribution and mysterious markings made at the entrance of homes in various neighbourhoods, the Chennai District Election Office sent teams to check cash distribution.
After 50 years of uninterrupted rule in Tamil Nadu by Dravidian parties, the RK Nagar bypoll is the first one devoid of larger than life leaders.
