Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for the kin of fishermen who died in the cyclone that devastated the coastal areas of the state recently.
Meeting the bereaving fishermen's families at St Jude’s college in Thoothoor, the last coastal hamlet within Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami assured a government job to the kin of the dead fishermen’s families in accordance with their educational qualifications.
Already, following extensive damage to horticulture crop in the wake of Cyclone Ockhi, it may be recalled that Palaniswami on Monday announced a special livelihood package for farmers in Kanyakumari district.
The emergency assistance of Rs 2,500 has also been doubled by the Chief Minister, who added that due compensation for the damaged boats and houses, for which enumeration was being done by a committee headed by commissioner of revenue administration, would be ensured.
Fishermen associations in parts of Kanyakumari and in Tirunelveli district have been staging protests demanding that the Centre and state expedite efforts to rescue missing fishermen besides a higher compensation package.
Banana farmers will get Rs 48,500/ha to RS 63,500/ha, the CM said, extending similar assistance to rubber plantations as well. Under the state disaster relief fund, the government offers Rs 18,000/ ha relief for damage to the extent of 33% and above.
