After May this year, actor Rajinikanth is meeting his fans for six days beginning today at Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam, an announcement that has given rise to speculations that he might finally announce his long expected political entry.
Rajinikanth, who has stridden the Tamil cine world like a colossus for the past four decades and enjoys almost a demigod-like status among his legion of followers, might make public his political entry during his address to fans.
The fans from around 20 districts will meet the superstar and click pictures with him. The organisers have announced that only the members of fan clubs in Tamil Nadu and those who have valid ID cards will be entitled to a picture with Rajinikanth.
"Whatever announcement has to be made, Rajini sir will make public on December 31," is all close aides are saying now. Could one the biggest political announcements of the year come on its last day?
Rajinikanth had in 1996 famously said that even 'God cannot save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa is voted back' to lead the State.
The actor's opposition to Jayalalithaa was seen as one factor which helped catapult the main opposition party DMK to power in the Assembly elections that year. Since then, his fans have urged him to enter politics and and expectations have risen among political observers.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are expected to fill in the power vacuum in the state. While Kamal has made his intentions about contesting elections clear, Rajinikanth continues to keep his fans and the political world guessing.
