Ponvannan resigns as Nadigar Sangam VP, blames Vishal

Actor and director Ponvannan has resigned as vice-president of South Indian Artistes' Association (Nadigar Sangam), following the actor body general secretary Vishal's foray into politics.

His resignation comes a day after several members of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council accused President Vishal of corruption.

"When we decided to contest the Nadigar Sangam elections, we repeatedly promised that the Sangam will be politically neutral," he said.

He added: "The main four people — president, vice-president, general secretary and treasurer — ran on that plank. Now, with Vishal contesting the byelection, I am unable to reconcile it with what we promised."

Ponvannan stated that he was unable as vice-president to respond to criticism about Vishal's decision to contest the RK Nagar byelection. Vishal, whose nomination for the bypoll was rejected, had declared that it was his independent decision to contest.

He further said that Nadigar Sangam is not the place to identify future Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, Nadigar Sangam president Nasser said that Ponvannan’s resignation has not been accepted and urged him to change his stance on this issue.
