Govt announces 462 fishermen missing from Kanyakumari district

A total of 462 fishermen from Kanyakumari district are missing in the aftermath of cyclone Ockhi, District Collector Sajjan Singh R Chavan said on Monday.

Opposition DMK will stage a protest in the southern district on Tuesday urging the Centre and state government to expedite rescue of missing Kanyakumari fishermen post Cyclone Ockhi.

Meanwhile, Kerala will seek a special financial package from the Centre to rehabilitate families affected by cyclone Ockhi and ensure safety of the coastal region.

Fishermen from all the 18 fishermen hamlets in Puducherry resorted to a dharna near the Swadeshi Cotton Mills here on Monday to express their solidarity with the agitating fishermen in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

K-town celebrities have once again come together to lend their support for the latest crisis in Tamil Nadu — cyclone Ockhi.

The natural disaster has played havoc with the livelihoods of many fishermen in the Kanyakumari region, along with its surrounding fishing-dependent hamlets.
