Inspector Periyapandian laid to rest; leaders, top cops, people pay homage

The body of inspector Periyapandian, who was shot dead in Rajasthan during a botched-up plot to nab burglary suspects, was brought to the Chennai airport and taken to his native village in Tirunelveli district.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, leader of opposition M K Stalin and other political leaders, top bureaucrats and police officers paid respects to the officer by placing wreaths.

While police had earlier said that the body would be directly airlifted from Jaipur to Chennai and would reach the city during the early hours of Thursday, the body was transported via Ahmedabad and then to Chennai and reached the airport around 12.30 pm.

An area was already demarcated near Gate no.5 for leaders to pay respects to Periyapandian. Panneerselvam was among the earliest to reach the airport.

Meanwhile, a day after inspector Periyapandian’s murder, police have arrested one of the main suspects in the Kolathur gold heist case — Dinesh Chowdry near Jodhpur.

The 20-year — old along with Nathuram were the primary suspects in the burglary in November in which a gang drilled a hole through the first floor of a jewellery store near Kolathur and escaped with 3.5 kg gold jewellery.

At the Madurai airport, Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan paid homage to his mortal remains. The body was then escorted to Moovirundhali by road.
