RK Nagar: Last day to file nominations; Vaiko, Vishal surprise all

With today being the last day to file nominations for RK Nagar by-election, last minute surprises are said to be in store.

The AIADMK’s presidium chairman and candidate for the Radhakrishnan Nagar byelection, E Madhusudanan, dissident leader TTV Dhinakaran and DMK’s candidate N Marudu Ganesh were among those who submitted their nomination papers to the Returning Officer for the constituency on Friday.

The R K Nagar byelection was necessitated by Jayalalithaa’s death in December last year. Though it was initially scheduled on April 12 this year, the bypoll was rescinded by the Election Commission following widespread allegations of bribery.

In a surprise development, Tamil actor Vishal has announced his intention of contesting in the RK Nagar bypoll.

Vishal, who is the President of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council and the Nadigar Sangam General Secretary, has stated that he will file his nomination for the RK Nagar polls on Monday.

"I thought it was time. I can't sit and watch anymore. These people did not even conduct civic polls. As a citizen, one does not even know who is supposed to pick up garbage outside the house. That's the condition now," he said.

Meanwhile, MDMK chief Vaiko on Sunday announced his party's support to the DMK in the R K Nagar Assembly bypoll scheduled on December 21, the first such gesture after over a decade.
