Cyclone Ockhi, which claimed 13 lives in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, has now moved beyond Lakshadweep, the weather department said bringing huge relief to the people of the rain-battered states.
However, many fishermen are still missing and warships have been deployed to comb the southeastern coast for fishing boats missing in wild seas.
Meanwhile, a fresh spell of rainfall is expected to lash Tamil Nadu as the well-marked low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea is likely to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours and a deep depression in the subsequent 48 hours, the Met office said on Sunday.
Hovering over the north Sumatra coast and the adjoining south Andaman Sea, the low pressure area now lies over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea and equatorial Indian Ocean, it said in its latest bulletin.
A CWC advisory said the west-flowing rivers in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzzha and Ernakulam in Kerala were likely to rise over the next 24 hours and then, slowly fall as the rain reduced.
Union Minister for Defence, Nirmala Sitharaman visited those affected by Ockhi cyclone in Kanyakumari and assured full central assistance in rescue and relief operations.
A tweet by Indian Navy said, "INS Kolkata rescues 9 fishermen from FV Akash at 1600h today after being located by P8I, 150km east of Kavaratti. All survivors transferred to Kavaratti by IN Seaking Helo."
