Kaala single on May 1

The first single of superstar Rajinikanth's upcoming flick, Kaala will be released on May 1, the film's producer Dhanush said today.

Dhanush tweeted: "A surprise to Superstar fans. #kaala 1st single #semmaweightu will be released tom(orrow) evening at 7 pm."

The much awaited audio of the movie, composed by Santhosh Narayanan, will be released on May 9.

Dhanush posted on Twitter: "Wunderbar films presents, Superstar’s #kaalaa audio will release on #may9th ... get ready to celebrate thalaivars swag with Santosh narayanan’s stylish music."

Dhanush also revealed that audio of Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions will be out on the same day. After Kabali, Kaala is music composer Santhosh Narayanan's second album with Superstar Rajinikanth.

Both films are directed by Ranjith of Madras fame. Kaala is slated to hit the screens on June 7.

HC denies bail to lawyer in doctor murder case

The Madras High Court has turned down the bail granted to a lawyer, accused in the murder of a Chennai-based neuro surgeon over a property dispute in 2013. However, the court directed the police not to arrest him till 6

pm on May 15.

Justice RMT Teekaa Raman cancelled the bail granted to Williams, When the criminal original petition filed by the city police came up for hearing.

On September 14, 2013, Dr Subbiah was attacked by a gang near his work place at Raja Annamalai Puram, apparently due to a dispute over a 2.4-acre plot of land at Anjugramam near Kanyakumari.

Nine days later, the doctor succumbed to his injuries. The entire sequence of him being accosted by the gang and being hacked was captured by a CCTV installed in a nearby apartment.

According to reports, advocate Basil and his senior, Williams, attached to the Madurai Bench of the High court, approached the latter’s friend James Sathish Kumar (37), a physician of ESIC hospital, Tirunelveli.

Basil and his family allegedly wanted their relative Subbiah dead owing to a dispute over property worth over Rs. 12 crore in Anjugramam, Kanyakumari.

The latest buzz is that Vijay TV has acquired the satellite rights of superstar Rajinikanth's upcoming film Kaala. According to sources, the rights have been acquired from Dhanush's Wunderbar Pictures for a whopping price.

Telangana CM meets Stalin, Karunanidhi; discusses federal front

Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, on a mission to form a non-BJP non-Congress alternative, on Sunday met DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi and its working president M K Stalin in Chennai.

Soon after landing in Chennai, Rao drove down to the Gopalapuram residence of Karunanidhi and enquired about his health condition.

He was received at the residence by Stalin, who presented him a shawl. Former Union Ministers T R Baalu and A Raja were present when the meeting took place.

Rao described the meeting as "very delightful". He said his ongoing effort was not aimed at some kind of a "third front".

It was not a mere alignment of political parties but "that of the people" of the country", the Telangana Rashtra Samithi supremo told reporters in a joint press meet with

Stalin.

Stalin said he had healthy discussions with Rao

and the view points expressed by him would be discussed with like minded parties and also at the DMK's various forums, including the Executive and the General Council meetings.

I hate Ajith, like vijay: Vishal

"One thing I don’t like about Ajith is his inaccessible nature. I even tried to reach Ajith through his PRO Suresh Chandra to discuss something but he was unavailable," Vishal has said.

In an interview to Ananda Vikatan, he said, "I like Vijay, there is no negative quality in him. Vijay has come up in life by facing a lot of harsh criticisms and today he is a successful star in Tamil cinema."

Meanwhile, Vishal's Irumbuthirai is all set to release on May 11. It is a science fiction thriller film directed by P S Mithran.

The movie features Vishal, Arjun and Samantha Akkineni in the lead roles, with Yuvan Shankar Raja scoring the music.

CJ denies charges, says verdict in 11 MLAs case given as per conscience

Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee today said, "We have passed the judgement based on our conscience and we are answerable only to God. But, everyone has the right to comment on verdicts passed by the court."

She this while responding to calls to take up a contempt of court case against disqualified MLA and TTV Dhinakaran supporter Thanga Tamilselvan who had criticised the High Court judgement yesterday turning down a batch of petitions, filed by the DMK and other parties seeking to disqualify 11 MLAs including Deputy Chief Minister, O Panneerselvam.

Meanwhile today, G Devarajan, an advocate clerk, was removed from the court hall after he created a ruckus by impressing upon Chief Justice Indira Banerjee to deliver the verdict on petitions filed against the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs owing allegiance to sidelined leader TTV Dhinakaran.

Banerjee questioned his locus standi pointing out that his impleading petition in that matter had been disallowed by the court.

Later, she said the verdict in the case would be delivered soon.

She said the verdict on a plea seeking disqualification of 11 MLAs, including Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, was given as per conscience.

Ajith to shoot in 'village' for one month

The team of Ajith's Viswasam directed by Siva is creating a village set at Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad, which is considered lucky by the 'thala'.

Work that had been stopped owing to the strike in Kollywood has resumed and the set will be ready by the weekend, sources say.

As the film’s shoot is delayed by two months because of the TFPC strike, Siva and team are planning to complete Viswasam without break.

"The shoot of Viswasam is likely to commence on May 7, the team will be camping in Hyderabad for nearly one month.," reports said.

Ajith has worked on his physique and will be sporting a look that’s different from what he was seen in, in his last few films, it is learnt.

For the first time, Imman is composing music for Thala Ajith in Viswasam, the composer has also already delivered two songs to director Siva.

It was reported earlier that the shooting of the project was expected to commence on March 23 in Hyderabad, but because of the TFPC strike, it was postponed.

Double relief for AIADMK, as HC gives relief in OPS disqualification & Jaya portrait cases

Madras high court on Friday rejected the plea to disqualify Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam and legislators who cross-voted during the trust vote of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

Also on the same day, the HC quashed a petition filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, who sought the removal of Jayalalithaa's portrait from the Assemby hall, since she was convicted in a disproportionate assets case.

Delivering verdicts on different pleas, the HC said it can not interfere in the decisions of the Assembly speaker.

The seven foot high portrait of M Jayalalithaa was unveiled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by the Speaker on February 12.

Passing orders on the petition filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Ms Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddahose dismissed the plea stating that the court could not interfere in the adminstrative powers of the Speaker.

Earlier in the day, in another crucial verdict, the HC dismissed a petition for early release filed by S Nalini, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Kamal & others slam Centre for seeking time in Cauvery issue

The Central government today mentioned that it has moved an application in the Supreme Court for a two-week extension of time to frame a Cauvery water sharing 'scheme'.

This development triggered furore in Tamil Nadu politics, with many slamming the union government for its decision.

Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan said in a tweet: "Centre has delayed the formation of Cauvery water management board yet again."

The actor-turned-politician, a well-known critic of the central and the state governments, added: "Justice delayed is justice denied. TN people will never forget this injustice."

It may be noted that the Apex Court while hearing a contempt of Court plea filed by the Tamilnadu government on 9 April directed the Central government to formulate the scheme draft before 3 May.

HC rejects Nalini's plea for release

The Madras High Court toay dismissed a petition for early release filed by S Nalini, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

A Division Bench comprising Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice R Subramanian dismissed the plea on the ground that the court could not interfere on the issue as

as the matter was been already seized of by the Supreme Court.

Nalini had sought premature release under the 1994 scheme and had later moved the court. The state government had opposed the plea citing pendency of a similar matter in the Supreme Court then.

Nalini had filed the appeal against the 2016 order of Justice M Sathyanarayanan rejecting her prayer for premature release under a 1994 state government scheme under Art 161 (powers of Governor to grant pardon).

Nalini was sentenced to death by a special court for her involvement in Gandhi's assassination at Sriperumbudur near Chennai on May 21, 1991.

The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after Sonia Gandhi, the former Prime Minister's widow, sought clemency -- for the sake of Nalini's daughter.

Rajini's super stills from US rock social media

Superstar Rajinikanth has once again proved why he is being hailed as 'style king', with the pictures clicked in the United States, where is currently staying.

The photos have him standing on an escalator and taking a Metro ride. They show him super cool and super stylish manner and have become an instant hit among his fans and in the social media.

It is said he will return by the first week of May. Sources close to the actor say that he is there for regular check up. In the US, he will also attend an event at Sri Sachithanantha Saraswathi Ashram, it is claimed.

Weeks after appointing more than 7,000 office-bearers to the Rajini Makkal Mandram, actor Rajinikanth is said to have called for a review of the work done thus far by the office-bearers.

According to an office-bearer, the exercise was meant to instil a sense of competitiveness among various district office-bearers and encourage them to do more.

Recently, expanding his outreach beyond India, superstar Rajinikanth, who commands fan following across the world, today appointed office-bearers in the United States and Canada for his Makkal Mandram, a pre-cursor to the political party to be floated by him.

Petrol bomb attack on Sterlite factory

Amid continuing protests demanding its closure, the Sterlite Industries' copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi came under a petrol bomb attack by unidentified persons.

Reports said that nobody was injured in the incident which company sources blamed anti-Sterlite protesters who in turn termed it a drama staged by the company.

The incident happened near the main gate where there used to be four or five security personnel during the day and three at night. Three personnel were on duty when the incident took place around 12.30 am, a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, MDMK general secretary Vaiko filed a public interest litigation petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday, seeking an injunction against the functioning and extension of the copper smelting unit of Sterlite Industries at Meelavittan in Thoothukudi.

Vaiko said in his plea that Sterlite Industries, which is expanding its existing plant, was yet to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Central Pollution Control Board.

Moreover, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had not extended the consent for the existing plant to operate, he said and added that it lapsed in March 2018.

Vijay Sethupathi is Rajini's villain in Karthik Subbaraj movie

Vijay Sethupathi has been roped in for Karthik Subbaraj's next film with Superstar Rajinikanth. The film will have music by Anirudh Ravichander and is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.

"We are happy to announce that for the first time, Vijay Sethupathi will be acting with Superstar Rajini in #SuperstarWithSunPictures. #VijaySethupathiWithSuperstar," tweeted Sun Pictures.

According to sources, vijay Sethupathi will play the vilain in the movie, which has already generated huge expectations.

This is Sethupathi's first outing with the Superstar. Vijay Sethupathi is currently filming for Mani Ratnam's next, Chekka Chevantha Vaanam.

Karthik Subbaraj recently revealed that his 2014 film Jigarthanda helped him fulfil his dream of working with Rajinikanth.

The director said in an interview that he wanted to cast the actor in the film but was too scared to approach him as he was a budding filmmaker at that time

Though Rajinikanth has entered Tamil Nadu politics, he is not done with his acting career just yet. He has two films slated for release this year – Pa Ranjith's Kaala and Shankar's 2.O, the sequel to Enthiran.

Madras HC orders CBI probe into gutkha scam

The Madras high court today ordered a CBI probe into the alleged multi-crore gutkha scam in which involvement of state health minister C Vijaya Baskar and director general of police T K Rajendran are suspected.

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose passed the order on two petitions filed by J Anbazhagan, an MLA of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and another by social activist KR Ramaswamy.

In the order, the judges said, "The underground gutkha business is a crime against society and therefore we deem it fit to order a CBI probe into the issue."

In July 8 2016, raids were conducted at the godown, offices and residences of a pan masala and gutka manufacturer in Tamil Nadu, who was facing charges of evading tax to the tune of Rs 250 crore.

Seized during the raid was a diary containing names of those who were believed to have been paid off by the gutka manufacturers.

On January 30, the court noted that the way the Tamil Nadu government was opposing a simple PIL for a CBI probe into the alleged gutka scam was prompting the court to go deeper into the issue, before reserving its verdict on the PIL.

Vijay Sethupathi, Simbu to shoot together in foreign country

Now that the shoot of Mani Ratnam's Chekka Chivantha Vaanam has resumed after the TFPC strike, Vijay Sethupathi has joined the sets of the movie.

Sources say that Mani Ratnam will also be soon shooting an important scene between STR and Vijay Sethupathi in a foreign country.

The movie has a ensemble of cast including Arvind Swamy, Arun Vijay, Simbu, Vijay Sethupathi, Jyothika and Aishwarya Rajesh.

Actors including Prakash Raj, Thiagarajan, Mansoor Ali Khan and Jayasudha play other pivotal roles. Principal photography of the film commenced in February 2018. The film will also be dubbed in Telugu as Nawab.

Following a brief break after the release of Kaatru Veliyidai (2017), Mani Ratnam chose to begin pre-production on his next film by June 2017 and brought in composer A. R. Rahman and cinematographer Santosh Sivan for the project.

Stalin offers support to Mamata's 'Third Front' efforts

DMK working president MK Stalin on Wednesday publicly endorsed, for the first time, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s efforts to bring regional parties together under a non-BJP third front.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Stalin said, "DMK has always stood for the unity of regional parties and stronger federal co-operation."

He added: "I endorse the efforts of @MamataOfficial to bring together various political parties to oppose the autocratic and antidemocratic rule of the BJP."

Though the tweet named and targeted only the BJP, what was left unsaid was whether the DMK was making a tactical shift away from the Congress-led unified opposition front.

Stalin said, "DMK is part of the (Congress-led) UPA. Under these circumstances she (Mamata Banerjee) has placed a request. Since elections are a year away, we will discuss the matter in the high level committee meeting."

Also, there were reports that Mamata was likely to meet DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi, the father of Stalin.

"Besides enquiring the health condition of the 94-year-old leader, Mamata, during her visit to the city, would place a formal request to the DMK to join the third front to take on the BJP and the Congress," sources had said.

Vijay TV goes for Rajini, Sun TV settles with Sasikumar

The latest buzz is that Vijay TV has acquired the satellite rights of superstar Rajinikanth's upcoming film Kaala.

According to sources, the rights have been acquired from Dhanush's Wunderbar Pictures for a whopping price.

Meanwhile, Sun TV has bought the satellite rights of Sasikumar’s crime thriller film Asuravadham. The trailer of the film was intriguing and it’s one of the most viewed trailers in Sasikumar’s career.

Directed by debutant Maruthupandian, the shoot of the film was wrapped up in 40 days flat. Bankrolled by Leena Lalitkumar under the Seven Screen Studios banner, the film stars Nandita Swetha in the lead alongside Sasikumar.

Sasikumar is now busy with Naadodigal 2, which will be helmed by Samuthirakani. Apparently, the film won’t be a sequel but will carry forward the flavour of Naadodigal.

Big fight in Sasikala family, TTV threatens to reveal Dhivakaran's secrets

AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran, who is also R K Nagar MLA, today said that his uncle Dhivakaran is talking with vendetta.

Speaking to mediapersons at Kumbakonam, he indirectly threatened Dhivakaran by saying the he knew how the latter used to talk about Sasikala.

"We have not accepted the launch of AMMK. It has been done to erase AIADMK from the political scene. TTV is acting independently and taking decisions without consulting anyone in the party," Dhivakaran told reporters.

He added: "Dhinakaran has started this party only for the benefit of his family members. In order to force us out, they are spreading rumours that we are returning to AIADMK. We will not do that and will function separately as Amma faction."

Earlier in a Facebook post, Vetrivel claimed that Sasikala's brother Dhivakaran and his son Jeyanandh are working together against the interests of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).

Vetrivel further alleged that they might be working in the interest of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, for reasons which are unknown just as yet.

Bhaskar Oru Rascal delayed?

Arvind Swami and Amala Paul starrer Bhaskar Oru Rascal, a remake of the Malayalam film 'Bhaskar The Rascal' was all set to hit the screens on April 27.

However now, reports say that the film has been postponed due to unknown reasons. However, we await an official confirmation regarding the same.

Produced by Harshini Movies, Bharathan Films, distributor of Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam will release the film in Tamil Nadu.

Written and directed by Siddique, the movie is a remake of his own Malayalam film Bhaskar the Rascal (2015). The film features Arvind Swamy and Amala Paul in the lead roles, while Baby Nainika play supporting roles. The team began production in February 2017.

Siddique revealed that he planned to keep the essence of the original Malayalam film, but would incorporate more action scenes for the Tamil version. Comedy actors including Soori, Ramesh Khanna and Robo Shankar were also drafted in to work on the project.

Meanwhile, there is a buzz that Arvind Swami, who is going strong and steady in his second innings, is all set to join hands with ace director KS Ravikumar for an action entertainer.

3 aides of Veerappan acquitted

A court in Erode has acquitted three close associates of slain sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, in connection with an ivory smuggling case, in 2000.

Rajendran, Jawahar and Shanmugam, all close associates of Veerappan, were acquiited by Sathyamangalam Magistrate K Kumarasivam , who said there was no proper evidence against the accused.

Only last week, a close aide of Veerappan had died while serving his jail term at Parappana Agrahara Central prisons in Bengaluru.

Simon suffered severe diabetes and other ailments. He was shifted to Victoria Hospital from KR Hospital on April 4.

He was convicted for life in multiple cases, including a bomb blast case at Palar, Tamil Nadu, in 1993 and the murder of IPS officer P Harikrishna.

Simon hailed from Tomerpalya village in Kollegal taluk. He was considered an expert at exploding gelatin sticks, a technique which he had used in the 1993 Palar blast

Kamal holds model Grama Sabha meet in Chennai

The meeting would be presided over by Kamal Haasan at his Alwarpet office. Office-bearers of Makkal Needhi Maiam will take part in the meeting. It will discuss the importance of grama sabha and need to empower them.

While addressing his supporters through YouTube live on Sunday, the actor kept stressing on the importance of the educated MNM supporters and volunteers to talk and make aware of various problems to the people who live in villages.

He outlined a few upcoming initiatives of his party and answered questions from party cadre and the public, which had been sent to him in advance.

Kamal said his app would function primarily as a watchdog app which people could use to highlight and remind the government about the flaws in the system. He added that party cadre could use the app to show their work on the field as well.

He said his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) will unveil its plans to focus on villages in a couple of days. That will include initiatives to adopt villages, to maintain water bodies and to help improve infrastructure of schools in those villages.

"We need to work closely with the village communities for adopting villages. Maintaining water bodies in a sustained way can help in overcoming the water crisis the state is facing," he said.

Adyar bank robbery: Two more arrested

Chennai Police today detained two persons for aiding the main accused, Manish Kumar, in the sensational bank robbery at Adyar last afternoon.

Sources said that two men including Premkumar, a roommate of the accused, were detained in connection with the case.

In what seemed like a sequence from an action thriller, a 22-year-old man robbed an Indian Bank branch of Rs 6 lakh at gunpoint in Adyar Monday afternoon.

After the ‘successful’ heist, the robber had come out and hopped on his two-wheeler that he had parked just outside the branch and rode away. But he was caught by members of the public and police personnel after a chase.

Only around six customers were inside the bank as the man had entered during the start of the lunch hour.

Mohanraj, 26, a customer held at gunpoint during the stick-up, helped nab the robber, Manish Kumar, of Bihar, giving chase and ramming his motorcycle with his own bike at a traffic signal 500m from the bank.

Police investigating the gunpoint robbery of an Indian Bank branch in Adyar on Monday said that the accused, Manish Yadav, hailed from Bihar and believe that he was motivated simply by a desire to get rich.

I will sure start political party: Rajinikanth

Superstar Rajinikanth, who left for the US for a medical check-up on Monday night and is expected to return after a fortnight, termed BJP leader and actor S Ve Shekher’s comments on the media as “unpardonable crime”.

He said that he will formally launch his political party as announced before. He also said that criticism is part public life and cannot be avoided since he aspired to join politics.

On the ongoing investigation into the attempt to lure college girls by suspended assistant professor Nirmala Devi of the Devanga Arts College, the actor said that if the allegations were proven true, the harshest of punishments should be given to the accused.

"I am going to launch the party. It is for sure. The date is, however, not known and I will let you know at the right time,” he told reporters here ahead of leaving for US on a personal trip.

Rajinikanth said he had not yet decided on when he would launching his political party. “It will take some time," he added.

To a question on veteran film director Bharathirajaa slamming him for his comment over an attack on police personnel during the anti-IPL protest, the actor reiterated that an "attack against police personnel is unpardonable, and at the same time they (police) should not go beyond their brief."

DMK-led opposition form human chain across TN for Cauvery

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and other parties protested against Cauvery issue in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai on Monday, by forming human chain across the state.

The human chain agitation was held in line with the decision taken at the DMK-sponsored all party meeting, which urged the State government to take legal measures to ensure formation of the CMB and the CWRC.

“While the Central government has filed a petition seeking clarification on the scheme, the State government remained a silent spectator in a bid to remain in power", it said.

It added that the human chain agiation was to condemn the State government and mount more pressure on the Centre to

for the CMB and the CWRC as per the Apex court order and that of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal which was notified in the Central government gazette.

The party workers formed a human chain and held placards demanding constitution of Cauvery Management Board. Earlier, the DMK staged protests and rally demanding the Board.

On 16 February, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board to implement a formula for sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Rajini leaves for US

Superstar Rajinikanth will leave for the United States tonight, to undergo health checkup. He will be there for around 10 days, reports said.

It is said he will return by the first week of May. Sources close to the actor say that he is going for regular check up. In the US, he will also attend an event at Sri Sachithanantha Saraswathi Ashram, it is claimed.

Weeks after appointing more than 7,000 office-bearers to the Rajini Makkal Mandram, actor Rajinikanth is said to have called for a review of the work done thus far by the office-bearers.

According to an office-bearer, the exercise was meant to instil a sense of competitiveness among various district office-bearers and encourage them to do more.

'AIADMK-BJP double-barrelled gun' article triggers flutter in TN politics

An article published in the ruling party's mouthpiece Namadhu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma on Sunday took a swipe at the DMK for its protests against the State and the Centre and said any number of protests would not sever the ties between the AIADMK and the BJP.

Even as it created flutter in Tamil Nadu politics, two senior leaders of the ruling AIADMK sought to make light of an article published in the party's mouthpiece.

Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai and minister D Jayakumar said that only the high command of the party can decide on alliance with the BJP at the time of electino.

Jayakumar further said a "columnist" cannot determine electoral pacts. But DMK working president M K Stalin said the AIADMK and the BJP are indeed double-baralleled guns.

In politically significant remarks, the ruling AIADMK on Sunday said that signs of its working together with BJP like a “double-barrelled gun” in the political arena were visible and “no one can sever ties” between the two parties.

Stalin recently said Tamil Nadu could not get justice in the Cauvery water dispute since the ruling AIADMK remained a puppet of the BJP government at the Centre.

Rakul Preet joins Suriya for NGK

The shoot of Selvaraghavan-Suriya’s NGK has resumed in Chennai. In the previous schedule, the film’s director shot scenes featuring Suriya and Sai Pallavi.

This time, Rakul Preet has joined the shooting of the movie. A grand village set has been constructed for the film in which major portions will be canned.

Touted to be an intense action thriller, Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing the music for NGK and Sivakumar Vijayan of Iraivi fame is cranking the camera.

Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the first look and title of the film was revealed last month and generated a lot of curiosity among fans.

SR Prabhu, producer of NGK had previously announced that the film will hit the screen on Diwali but we have to wait and see how the team would accomplish the task after the 48 days strike.

Going by social media buzz, the film has created huge expectations amongst fans. The film marks Suriya’s first collaboration with Selvaraghavan.

Govt ad portrays EPS as god, trolled in social media

An advertisement by the Tamil Nadu state government has left people in fits of laughter.

The two-minute advertisement shows a young woman in a wheelchair reaching a temple. The girl, who is the beneficiary of a government job, asks the priest to perform archanai in the name of Sami.

When the priest asks which Sami, she says, "To me, the god is our Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. The archanai is in his name.” At these words, a large section of the audience in the theatre guffawed in surprise and amusement.

The government commissioned ad has left the Chief Minister  as the butt of jokes in the state. And it has of course led to some sami-level memes and jokes on the internet.

Many feel that the advertisement is an attempt to accord a God-like status to CM E Palaniswami similar to that of former CM Jayalalithaa and MG Ramachandran.

Reacting to the ad, AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran said, " Since they are in power now, they are doing whatever they want. People are watching each and everything."

Simbu creates flutter at CoP's office for Mansoor's release

Tense moments prevailed at the city Police Commissioner’s office today after actor Simbu arrived there in connection with the recent arrest of actor Mansoor Ali Khan.

He went to the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office in Egmore, Chennai to request the release of Mansoor Ali Khan.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “Mansoor Ali Khan is fine and they’ve detained him with proper evidence but they’ve assured there will be a decision soon.”

He said further: "One thing I want to make it clear that Mansoor Ali Khan was arrested for questioning something, but he’s not the only one who did that, there were others too, so why aren’t they arrested?”

A team comprising 50 personnel headed by Vepery Inspector Veerakumar tightened the security ahead of the actor’s visit, after he publicised it in the social media.

As expected, fans thronged there and around seven of them were reportedly detained for unlawful assembly.

AIADMK to contest in K'taka polls, names candidates

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the ruling party of Tamil Nadu has announced its decision to contest in the Assembly elections in Karnataka.

AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and co-coordinator K Palaniswami, deputy chief minister and chief minister of Tamil Nadu, respectively, announced their party's candidates for Hanur, Gandhinagar and Kolar Gold field Assembly segments.

MP Yuvaraj is the party's pick for Gandhinagar while RP Vishnukumar and M Anbu will contest from Hanur and Kolar Gold Fields respectively.

The AIADMK had contested five seats in the 2013 elections. It is to be noted that Congress and BJP are locked in a fierce fight in the May 12 elections to 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka.

In a joint statement, the CM and the deputy CM said the governing council of the party has taken the decision to contest in the Karnataka Assembly elections, slated to be held on May 12.

It's official: Kaala to release on June 7

Actor-producer Dhanush has announced the release date for Superstar Rajinikanth's film Kaala. And the film which was slated to release on April 27 will now hit theatres on June 7.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, Kaala was initially supposed to release on April 27. But the plans had to be changed because the Tamil industry went on strike on March 1.

The Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed against Kaala seeking to stall the release over plagiarism charges.

On hearing Rajashekaran’s case, Madras HC said that the petitioner doesn’t have enough proof for owning the title and dismissed the plea because the necessary script details were also not furnished.
