Governor suspends Bharathiyar University V-C

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has suspended Bharathiyar University Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathi who was arrested for alleged graft, saying the charges levelled against the academic were "serious".

Meanwhile, a special court on Tuesday posted for February 8 the hearing of a bail petition filed by Ganapathi, who was recently arrested on bribery charges.

When the case came up for hearing before the court (Prevention of Corruption Act), special Judge John Mino posted the case for Thursday and directed the government to respond to the petition by that day, as sought by the public prosecutor.

The 36th formation day celebration of the Bharathiyar University, which was to be held on Monday, was postponed in the wake of the arrest of Ganapathi and allegations against some faculty members of aiding him to indulge in graft.

Ganapathi was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption last week for alleged graft in relation to teacher appointment.

"In exercise of the inherent powers vested in the Governor of Tamil Nadu, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the University A Ganapathy has been placed under suspension with effect from February 6, 2018," a Raj Bhavan release said.
