Successful Flight Test Of Atgm Nag

Anti Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) NAG were successfully flight-tested today in desert conditions against two tank targets at different ranges and timings. NAG ATGM has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and today’s flight tests have once again proved its capability. With this, the developmental trials of the missile have been completed and it is now ready for induction.

Director General (Missiles and Strategic Systems) Dr. G Satheesh Reddy, said that with the successful test flights, the technologies pertaining to ATGM to engage targets in different conditions have been established.

Chairman, DRDO & Secretary, Department of Defence R&D Dr. S Christopher, congratulated the NAG team for the achievement.

Last rites of Kanchi seer today, condolences pour in from across country

Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal is set to be interred at the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham today. The 69th head of the math died of a cardiac arrest on Wednesday morning. He was 82.

The last rites (brindavana pravesha karyakramam) of Jayendra Saraswathi is being performed today. His samadhi will be placed closer to his predecessor Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal.

President Ram Nath Kovind said: "Sad to hear of the passing of Jayendra Saraswatiji, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Our country has lost a spiritual leader and social reformer of rare eminence. My condolences to his countless disciples and followers."

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said: "Pay my respects to Kanchi peethadhipathi Shri Jayendra Saraswati who attained moksha. His contribution for the welfare of mankind and in promoting spirituality will always be an inspiration for others."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: "Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya was at the forefront of innumerable community service initiatives. He nurtured institutions which transformed the lives of the poor and downtrodden."

Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m saddened to hear about the death of Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. He was revered by lakhs of believers all over the world for his teachings. May his soul rest in peace.”

Tamil Nadu , Governor Banwarilal Purohit said "His death is a great loss to society, particularly his followers." Purohit paid a visit to the Seer only on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said, "apart from spiritual work, he (Jayendra Saraswathi) also showed a lot of interest in furthering issues of societal importance."

Why Karti Chidammbaram arrested, what's CBI's next move

The CBI arrested Karti Chidambaram, the son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, from Chennai on Wednesday for allegedly taking bribes to get clearance for TV venture INX Media to access foreign investment.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested on Wednesday from Chennai airport, moments after he landed after a visit to the UK. He is accused of clearing foreign investments worth around Rs. 300 crore in television company INX Media in exchange for bribes back in 2007.

An FIR filed by the CBI on May 15 last year had alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

It is alleged Karti had received funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh in the case, they said. The ED has also registered a money laundering case.

CBI had contended that there were "good, cogent" reasons for issuing of LOCs dated June 16, 2017 and July 28, 2017 and had submitted some documents in sealed cover saying Karti's case was not simple as it involves jugglery of accounts and property abroad.

Karti and his father had denied the allegations, saying there was no wrong-doing in the grant of FIPB approval to INX media.

Meanwhile, there is a buzz that Chidambaram may be arrested.

Sridevi cremated, hubby issues emotional statement

Actress Sridevi was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai on Wednesday in the presence of her family, film fraternity and thousands of fans.

Sridevi's filmmaker husband Boney Kapoor performed the last rites at the ceremony. The couple's daughters, Jahnvi and Khushi, were by his side, said sources close to the family.

Sridevi's untimely death at the age of 54 in Dubai on Saturday had stunned the nation.

The 54-year-old actor was clad in a red Kanjeevaram sari and wrapped in the Tricolour as she started her final journey from Celebration Sports Club in Lokhandwala to the Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium and Hindu Cemetery, with husband Boney Kapoor, brother-in-law Anil Kapoor, step-son Arjun Kapoor and the rest of the family by her side.

Meanwhile, her family said in a statement: "The past few days have been trying times for us as a family. Today, particularly, has been one of the hardest. We laid to rest a beautiful soul who has gone too soon. She leaves behind a legacy that is unique. Her talent was undeniable, her beauty unmatched and her ability to connect with the audience was legendary."

Boney Kapoor said, "Losing a friend, wife and mother of two young daughters is a loss inexplicable in words. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my family, friends, colleagues and well-wishers and all of you countless fans of my Sridevi who have stood by us like rocks. I am blessed to have the support and love of Arjun and Anshula, who have been such pillars of strength for myself, Khushi and Janhvi. Together, as a family we have tried to face this unbearable loss.

To the world she was their Chandni... the actor par excellence... their Sridevi... but to me she was my love, my friend, mother to our girls... my partner. To our daughters, she was their everything... their life. She was the axis around which our family ran."

Strike starts in film industry, no releases from today

After several rounds of talks between the digital service providers (DSPs) and the members of various south Indian film industries, the latter have announced that the strike will happen from today.

The Producers Council of South India has expressed their unhappiness against Digital Service Providers (DSP) like Qube for charging unfair VPF (Virtual Print Fee), which, according to them, makes producers and exhibitors suffer.

For a regional film, the costs come up to Rs 22,500 per screen for the producer. This charge includes a fee for hiring and delivering the content through digital distribution channel in theatres.

While theatre operators and DSPs earn from advertising, this revenue doesn’t reach the producers. Producers, on the other hand, say that Hollywood films only get a charge of Rs 10,000 for their lifetime while regional content has to pay higher rates.

It is learnt that QUBE, one of the leading digital service providers, tried to reduce the fee from RS 22,500 to 14,000 but producers turned down the offer.

Jayendra, Co-founder of QUBE posted on Twitter: "Qube offers multiple price options in Bangalore meeting between Producers and Digital Service Providers including dramatic price reduction from 22,500 to 14,000 rupees. All offers turned down".

President of India addresses Golden Jubilee celebrations of M.C. Mahajan D.A.V. College for Women, Chandigarh

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, graced and addressed the golden jubilee celebrations of M. C. Mahajan D. A. V. College for Women today (February 28, 2018) in Chandigarh.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said he was very happy to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the M.C. Mahajan D.A.V. College for Women. Inspired by the vision of the great social reformer Swami Dayanand Saraswati as well as the former Chief Justice of India, late Mehar Chand Mahajan, this college has been playing an important role in the field of female education. MCM DAV College has contributed greatly to women’s education in North India in the past five decades. The President expressed hope that this college will continue to be a model in the region, and will rise to even higher prominence in the coming 50 years.

The President paid tributes to Chandigarh as the first planned city of independent India. It offers an example, he said, for town planning for our country. 5th Chennai International Short Film Festival

The Festival was a grand success, and was one of the biggest dedicated short film festivals in India. It had an average foot fall of 250 people per day which is the highest recorded till date In Chennai. It had the participation of lot of Cinema Industry People for the first time. The screening and the sound quality was the best in the Country as it was done by Real Image Media Technologies who partner with more than 2000 theatres for screening.

The 5th Chennai International Film Festival screened short films belonging to various genres and languages from across the world. 371 Short films from 47 countries were submitted online for this edition of the Festival and around 127 films from 19 countries were screened at the festival. These short- films can be seen exclusively in theatres only and cannot be found on YouTube or digital freeware video-viewing platforms.

This year's foreign film selection celebrated contributions from India, Germany, Austria, Russia, Spain, US, UK, China, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Brazil, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands and Turkey.

To break the language barrier, movies in International Languages were subtitled in English.

The jury comprised of directors Pushkar&Gayatri, LokeshKanagaraj and MaddoneAshwin.

The Short films were divided mainly into 3 categories: Animation, Documentary and Fiction with awards across all categories. Total Cash Prize of INR 2,40,000 for a total of 10 awards were given to the winners and the runners. There is a MovieBuff Award this year with a cash prize of INR 10,000.

Entry was free of cost and open to all viewers above 18. An interaction session with a celebrity guest, took place every day during the festival with an aim to impart knowledge about film making to the film enthusiasts who attended the event.

Director K. Mohan Raja, Foreign dignitaries and Bureaucrats had inaugurated the Festival which was held on the 18th of February at 6 PM.

This week, around 25 films were screened everyday with celebrity interaction session each day having guests such as DheerajVaidy (director - Jil Jung Juk) ,Rathna Kumar (director - Meyadhamaan), Vijaykumar (director - Uriyadi), Sri Ganesh (director - 8 Thottakal), Sarjun (director - Lakshmi and Maa), Priyanka (scriptwriter of Maa), Abhishek Joseph George (actor), Sananth (actor) and ArolJothi (actor) who interacted with the audience on various topics related to cinema.

The valedictory function had artists and directors from the film fraternity such as athmika of meesayamuruku fame, meeramithun (8 thottakal), Daniel annie pope (kaathadi team), prakashraghavan and santoshKrishna(D 16) and Director Nithilan (KuranguBommai) who spoke about the opportunities in the short film industry and its growth over the past decade. ‘கதை திரைக்கதை வசனம் இயக்கம்’, ‘தாயம்’ ஆகிய படங்களில் நடித்த சந்தோஷ் பிரதாப் கதாநாயகனாக நடிக்க, அதுல்யா ரவி கதாநாயகியாக நடித்துள்ளார். இவர் ‘ஏமாலி’, ‘காதல் கண் கட்டுதே ’ ஆகிய படங்களில் கதாநாயகியாக நடித்தவர். மேலும் தீபக் பரமேஷ், ஆதித்யா கதிர் உள்ளிட்ட பலர் இந்தப்படத்தில் நடித்துள்ளனர்.

இந்தப்படம் ஐந்து நபர்களின் கூட்டு முயற்சியால் உருவாகி இருக்கிறது. அத்துடன் இந்த ஐந்து தயாரிப்பாளர்களில் ஒருவராகவும் தன்னை இணைத்துக்கொண்டுள்ளார் ஸ்ரீதர் வெங்கடேசன்.

த்ரில்லர் இவருக்கு பிடித்த ஏரியா என்பதாலோ என்னவோ, ‘என் பெயர் ஆனந்தன்’ படத்தையும் முழுநீள த்ரில்லராகவே உருவாக்கியுள்ளார். ஆனால் ஆச்சர்யம் என்னவென்றால் த்ரில்லருக்கென்றே உள்ள வழக்கமான கதைக்களங்களை தேர்வு செய்யாமல் சில உண்மை சம்பவங்களை அடிப்படையாக வைத்து நாடகம், தெருக்கூத்து கலைகளை பின்னணியாக கொண்டு இந்தப்படத்தை உருவாக்கியுள்ளார்.

அதுமட்டுமல்ல, இந்தப்படம் தமிழையும், தமிழர் பண்பாடு, கலாச்சாரம் ஆகியவற்றை சுற்றி அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது இன்னொரு ஆச்சர்யம். தமிழ்நாடு முழுதும் இந்த கதை குறித்த தேடல், ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்ட இயக்குனர் ஸ்ரீதர் வெங்கடேசன், இந்தப்படத்தை த்ரில்லர் பாணியில் உருவாக்கியது நிச்சயம் தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்கு புதிதாக இருக்கும்.

அதுமட்டுமல்ல மேலும் தமிழ் சினிமா வரலாற்றில் முதன்முறையாக ஒரு புதுமுயற்சியாக க்ளைமாக்சுக்கு சற்று முன்பாக 12 நிமிடங்கள் கொண்ட பாடல் காட்சி இடம்பெறுகிறது. வழக்கமான பாடல் ( காதல் பாடல் ) போல் இல்லாமல் உணர்வு பூர்வமான பாடலாக இருக்கும். படத்தின் உயிர்நாடியாக இருக்கும் இந்தப்பாடல் ரசிகர்களுக்கு வெவ்வேறு உணர்வுகளை கடத்தும். மேலும் வழக்கமான பாணியில் இருந்து மாறுபட்டு படத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு கேரக்டரையும் உருவாக்கியுள்ளார் இயக்குனர் ஸ்ரீதர்.

சீமைத்துரை, நெடுநல்வாடை ஆகிய படங்களுக்கு இசையமைத்த ஜோஸ் பிராங்க்ளின் இந்தப்படத்திற்கு இசையமைத்துள்ளார். மனோராஜா ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்ய; விஜய் ஆண்ட்ரூஸ் படத்தொகுப்பை கவனிக்கிறார்.

தப்புத்தண்டா படத்தில் நாயகனாக நடித்ததுடன் 'கிளாப்போர்ட் புரொடக்ஷ்ன்' நிறுவனம் சார்பில் படத்தை தயாரித்தார் வி.சத்யமூர்த்தி...இதை தொடர்ந்து சுசீந்திரன் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான நெஞ்சில் துணிவிருந்தால் மற்றும் விஜய் சேதுபதி – கௌதம் கார்த்திக் நடித்த ஒரு நல்ல நாள் பார்த்து சொல்றேன் போன்ற படங்களை தமிழகம் முழுவதும் வெளியிட்டார். இதனை தொடர்ந்து 'கிளாப்போர்ட் புரொடக்ஷ்ன்' சார்பில் தயாரித்து வரும் 'ஓடவும் முடியாது ஒளியவும் முடியாது' படத்தின் படப்பிடிப்பு வேகமாக நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

TN parties slam Centre over Cauvery, CM explains why they are friendly with union govt

Two opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have expressed shock the Centre's alleged "dithering" over the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) as per the Supreme Court order.

The main opposition DMK slammed the ruling BJP at the Centre on the Cauvery issue, saying it should not handle the matter with an eye on electoral gains in poll bound Karnataka, the upper riparian state in the river water sharing dispute.

PMK founder S Ramadoss said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's statement on the issue was shocking and it seemed the central government is washing its hands off the issue.

On Monday, Shipping and Water Resources Minister Gadkari had allegedly declined to give an assurance on setting up the CMB, maintaining that it is a complex task.

"The Prime Minister maintaining silence on the Cauvery issue by not speaking about it when he came to Tamil Nadu is condemnable," Stalin, Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday said the AIADMK government is friendly with the Centre only for the benefit of Tamil Nadu.

Kamal thanks people, demands govt to ensure safety of TN youth, kids

Kamal Haasan has claimed that about one lakh people attended the launch of his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), in Madurai last week.

“We express our gratitude to all the participants who exhibited exemplary energy and discipline. At the outset, we dedicate the success of the launch to the people of Madurai. We also thanks the office-bearers, secretaries and members of Narpani Iyakkam," he said.

He also thanked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, MLA Somnath Bharti and Farmers Association President PR Pandian.

He also released the list of members who will comprise the empowered committee that will shape and execute the policies of his newly-launched political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam.

Meanwhile, he demanded the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the safety of youth and children in the state. He was referring to the death of a medico from Tamil Nadu in Chandigarh and the rape of a minor Dalit girl in Villupuram district.

Sridevi body reaches Mumbai, funeral today

A chartered plane carrying mortal remains of actor Sridevi landed at the Mumbai airport on Tuesday night. Thereafter, the actor's body was taken to her residence in Lokhandwala.

Police personnel and private security guards deployed at the residence had a tough time in controlling the crowds when the ambulance carrying Sridevi's body drove into the house.

The family said in a statement that her body will be kept at Celebration Sports Club in Lokhandwala for people to pay their last respects before it is taken for cremation.

"On behalf of Khushi, Janhvi, Boney Kapoor, the entire Kapoor and Ayyappan families, a sincere thanks to the media for your continued sensitivity and support during this emotional moment," the statement read.

The statement further said that well-wishers can pay their condolences from 9.30am to 12.30pm at Celebration Sports Club, Garden No 5, Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West.

The family said media can also pay their respects "provided camera, recording devices, etc are left outside the venue".

"The last journey will commence at 2pm from Celebration Sports Club to Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium and Hindu Cemetery." The cremation will take place at around 3.30pm.

Gautami slams Kamal again, Raj Kamal Films reacts

Even as Gautami made fresh charges, Kamal Haasan’s production company Raaj Kamal Films International has denied actor Gautami’s allegation that it owes her money for her work as a costume designer for such films as Vishwaroopam and Dasavathaaram.

In a fresh blog post, Gautami said, "To all of those people who were so quick to judge me, you have known me for 30 years and I have never been one to throw my words around. When I say something about anyone, I do not speak without reason. And I do not speak without proof."

This was her reaction to the reactions made on her blog post a few days ago, in which she said Kamal's office had to settle her dues.

"As a single mother, who is fighting to start life again and build a secure future on her own, I need to concentrate my energies on positive and constructive matters. There is so much in this life that is good, honest & joyful and I look towards that. There are good & compassionate human beings in this world and I look for those people to be in my life," she said on Tuesday.

Stating that she has made a choice to look for positivity and peace in herlife, she added: "I have found motivation & joy in working to help my people and that is my path in life. I seek no validation for my decision but the door is wide open for anyone who wants to join us in working for our society."

Meanwhile, Raj Kamal Films said that both Dasavathaaram as well as Vishwaroopam were bankrolled by different production houses and Kamal has nothing to do with her payments in that regard.

Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal passed away in Kanchipuram this morning.

Sources said he was admitted to a hospital after he developed breathing difficulties. "He died there despite best efforts from doctors,"

அவர் பேசும் போது, "என்னைப் பற்றிப் படமெடுக்க முன் வந்தது மகிழ்ச்சி. யார் யாரோ கேட்டார்கள் ஆனால் யாரும் துணிச்சலாக முன்வரவில்லை. இவர்கள் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். இதுவே தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு வரப்போகும் பெரிய மாற்றத்துக்கான அறிகுறி என்று கூறலாம்." என்கிறார்

Row over Sanskrit song at IIT-Madras

Tamil Nadu political groups took offence to rendition of a Sanskrit invocation song and not the traditional Tamil one at an event in IIT Madras on Monday, alleging that it was done to snub the state’s language and people.

A teacher however said that conventionally, some events at the institute kicked off with Tamil prayers while others, especially the convocations, featured Sanskrit prayers but nobody had protested ever before.

The event saw the participation of Union minister Nitin Gadkari, during which he laid foundation stone for the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts on the IIT campus.

Union Minister of State Pon Radhakrishnan and IIT-M director Baskar Ramamurthy were among those present.A group of students sang Maha Ganapathim at the beginning of the event.

DMK working president M K Stalin demanded apology from the Centre. PMK founder S. Ramadoss, MDMK general secretary Vaiko and others too slamemed the Centre.

However, the IIT-Madras does not have the tradition of singing the Tamil invocation song. “We don’t train students for the invocation. All the students who volunteer to sing cannot sing in Tamil. They sing what they know – sometimes, it is a Marathi song; sometimes it is Bengali, sometimes Hindi," IIT-M Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said.

Updates on Jaya portrait and statue issues

The Madras High Court on Monday observed it cannot interfere with the decision of Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal to put up a portrait of late AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa in the legislature.

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee made it clear that the court cannot interfere with the decision of the Speaker. The Speaker, elected by the next Assembly, will take a decision on the matter, she said.

The portrait of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa was unveiled in the state assembly by Speaker P Dhanapal recently.

DMK MLA J Anbazhagan on the day also petitioned the Madras High Court to intervene and have the portrait removed after his demand to the Speaker to cancel the event fell in deaf ears.

Many parties slammed the move to open Jayalalithaa portrait, as she was convicted in disproportionate assets case.

Meanwhile, denying carelessness in the installation of a bronze statue of Jayalalithaa at the party headquarters here, senior leaders of the ruling party have said the statue that was unveiled on Saturday, which has come under criticism, will be replaced.

Shocking details about Sridevi's death

Sridevi, who was initially thought to have died of a cardiac arrest on Saturday, had drowned in the bathtub of her hotel in Dubai, the police there said on Monday.

The Dubai government said in a tweet that the police have transferred the case to the "Dubai Public Prosecution" which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.

"Following the completion of post mortem analysis, Dubai police headquarters today stated that the death of the Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment's bath tub following loss of consciousness," the Dubai government's media office said on Twitter.

Dubai Police called in Boney Kapoor to the Bur Dubai police station for investigation. The Police took his statement after which he was allowed to go back to his hotel room, reported Press Trust of India, quoting UAE's leading national daily Gulf News.

It is not clear what caused Sridevi, 54, to lose consciousness, and whether the initial report of her death due to cardiac arrest still holds. Her death, which was first reported at around 3 a.m. on Sunday in India, sent shock waves across the country.

Sridevi's body will be brought back to Mumbai for the funeral by a chartered jet. Indian envoy Navdeep Suri said officials are working closely with the authorities in UAE to expedite the return.

Madhavan undergoes surgery

Actor R Madhavan who was suffering from a shoulder injury had undergone a surgery recently.

On his social media handles, he posted a picture of him lying in the hospital bed and also revealed that he couldn't feel his right arm after the shoulder surgery.

"Shoulder surgery done... fighter back on track... cannot feel my right arm ha ha ha," Madhavan said. The post has garnered over almost 2 lakh likes within seven hours of being posted.
