The AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has decided to revert to direct elections for the posts of Mayor of Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities, a shift from Jayalalithaa’s policy of going in for indirect elections.
Tamil Nadu government on Thursday proposed to revert to direct election of heads of civic bodies such as Mayors and moved a Bill in the Assembly in this regard.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development, S P Velumani, moved the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Third Amendment) Act, 2018, seeking to revert to direct election of Corporation Mayors, Municipal Chairmen.
The Jayalalithaa government had scrapped direct elections and opted for indirect elections by enacting a legislation in June 2016.
Citing the reason for moving the bill, local administration minister SP Velumani said, "It has been brought to the notice of the government by the heads of departments that large number of representations were received from the general public, various forums, and elected representatives that direct election will be best system for smooth functioning of administration of the local bodies."
"After careful consideration, the Government has decided to change the method of election of Mayors of Municipal Corporations, Chairmen of Municipalities and Town Panchayats, from indirect to direct election (be people), which will facilitate better administration," he said.
The government has therefore decided to amend the laws in this regard, he added.
