Transport workers unions in Tamil Nadu called off their week-long strike on Thursday night after the Madras high court passed an interim order referring the wage dispute between the state government and the workers of state-owned transport corporations to arbitration.
The Madras HC on Thursday appointed its former judge E Padmanabhan as an arbitrator to adjudicate the dispute between the government and transport corporation employees over the quantum of wage revision and directed the striking workers to resume work.
Later in the night, the trade unions affiliated to Opposition political parties called off the strike. The protest came to an end after eight days, during which commuters all over the State faced severe difficulties.
After the high court's order, CITU leader A Soundararajan said, "We are ready to accept wage revision as per 2.44 multiplication factor, as proposed by the government, as a temporary relief."
Meanwhile, reports said that long-distance private bus operators are charging exorbitant rates for travel on the eve of Pongal holidays.
However, officials of leading bus operators denied that they are charging high and said fares are based purely on demand and supply, said an official of a transport operator.
